Aug. 21st, 2012 06:58 pmSo, Representative Akin has apologized and said that when he said: "It seems to me, from what I understand from doctors, that [women getting pregnant from rape] is really rare. If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down"," he meant "forcible" rape and not "legitimate." Leaving aside how that only somewhat lessens the offensiveness, he didn't say anything about the rest of the statement. That leaves the very worrisome fact that there's apparently at least one member of the House Science Committee who believes that women can magically secrete their own birth control at will.
Yeah, that's right. This guy is on the science committee, despite having no knowledge of things like basic biology. Here's a hint for him: Just because you want the human body to work a certain way (thus giving you a handy justification for your views on abortion) doesn't make it so.
