Hello, 2015! I am quite disappointed that this year has not come with Back to the Future style hoverboards so far, but knock wood, there won't be any Angel attacks. :D

And with the New Year comes Yuletide reveals!

First of all, I'm going to re-link to my gift from moonlight69, Un Regard Volé, un Coeur au Désespoir, a lovely little slice of life from the Les Mis Dallas AU, with Jean Valjean trying to deal with Cosette growing up. It gave me warm fuzzies inside, and y'all should read it if you're familiar with Les Mis.

And then there's my gift for Oanja, entitled Jumbo &!. As you might guess from the title, it's a Yotsuba&! fic, centered around Jumbo and Koiwai, with little scenes from when they first met, how Jumbo got his nickname, and Jumbo's first meeting with Yotsuba. It's pretty much G-rated gen, although I suppose it could be taken as shippy if you turn your head and squint.

Also, unrelated to Yuletide, I wrote a canon-era Les Mis fic, A Very Feuilly Christmas, which is just a bit of (again, G-rated and gen) Christmas fluff that has nothing whatsoever to do with me being slightly melancholy in the days leading up to Christmas about how I wouldn't be spending it with most of my friends and family.

I've been really neglecting my DW account, haven't I? Like, badly enough that I never even posted links to my Yuletide fic. Oops. Fixing that now, with bonus other stuff what I wrote recently (all Les Mis because that absolutely is The Fandom That Ate My Brain for the foreseeable future). All of it's gen, and all of it's extraordinarily safe for work.

First of all, my Yuletide fic for [personal profile] melannen, an excellent writer in their own right. "Five Times Enjorlas Dropped a Barricade on Someone." No, that is not a typo, as this is an Arm Joe fic. Yes, Arm Joe, the cracktastic Les Mis fighting game, where Marius summons armies of undead revolutionaries, there's a robotic version of Jean Valjean, and Enjorlas (as the game calls him) can drop barricades from the sky on his foes. AO3 link here or you can read it behind the cutsnip! )

Secondly, my fic for Miserable Holidays, the Les Mis holiday fanwork exchange. I received a spectacular moon colony AU from [personal profile] genarti, which you can read here on AO3. They've also written more in this 'verse on Tumblr.

As for what I wrote as a gift for [ profile] downtheroadandupthehill, it's "Saturn, Astronomy and All That Jazz," a modern AU fic centered around Combeferre and Grantaire. Genfic, because I am pants at writing anything else (although there's mention of one-sided Enjolras/Grantaire), mostly just banter. On the AO3 here or hiding behind the cut. snip! )

And lastly, a short, quick one, wherein Joly and Bossuet go to the Jardin de Plantes, visit the camel, and wind up laughing so hard that they disturb the other zoo-goers. "Still Life With Camel," based off a prompt by [ profile] pilferingapples, at the AO3, or under the cut. snip! )

bobcatmoran: (fics)
This will probably take some explanation, because I don't think battle pillows are a "thing" outside of a fairly small segment of the Les Mis fandom on Tumblr. Basically, [ profile] pilferingapples somehow managed to get a black eye from a pillow. [ profile] needsmoreresearch came up with the idea of battle pillows from this — basically, a somewhat vicious, animate breed of pillows. It sort of spiraled from there. Collective canon(?) holds that Bahorel raises some and they have a taste for hats, particuarly Jehan's. There's at least one fake scientific paper. There's a tag on Tumblr. And heaven help me, I wrote fic for it. My inspiration came from this thing.

Also posted at AO3.

In which coats are nibbled upon, a hat is eaten, and Combeferre tries to make sense of this whole mess. )

So there's this really cool Les Mis community on Tumblr (is that the right term? Community? It's a moderated fanworks blog) called Every Century Happy. As the FAQs state, "The Amis Have The TARDIS, (to the distress of Javert and The Doctor) and they’re going to fix ALL THE THINGS." It's a pretty awesome collection of fanworks, and I wrote a thing for it.

Fic is under the cut, and also here on the AO3. The other stuff on the community is pretty awesome as well, if you follow the link up above.

Summary: Les Amis de l'ABC hanging out onboard the TARDIS, shortly after they first arrive. Featuring musings over futuristic lighting systems, Grantaire drinking odd things he found in a cupboard somewhere, finding cool stuff while getting lost in the TARDIS' maze of corridors, a discovery that early 19th century astronomy still had a long ways to go, a heck of a lot of books, and a completely ridiculous number of characters. Gen, no warnings/triggers.

Wow, lookit that, fic. Hopefully this makes sense to those who didn't grow up playing Spelunx. For those who didn't, I'm just going to say that the competition the Doctor describes is an actual mini-game. And it is glorious.

Summary: The Doctor gave Amy and Rory a toaster, because that's what you give early 21st century newlyweds. Of course, this being the Doctor, the toaster has a few quirks he forgot to tell the Ponds about. No warnings/triggers.

Also on Ao3 here.

Yodel Toasters, Or Why You Shouldn't Let The Doctor Buy You Kitchen Appliances )

You can watch a video of Spelunx gameplay here. The toaster minigame is at 4:40.

Oh, hey, lookit that, reveals are over for Yuletide. Guess that means I can share what I wrote with y'all.

This year, I ventured into Tangled, Disney's Rapunzel movie, with The Frost Fair. Basically, it's Flynn and Rapunzel spending the day at the kingdom's winter carnival. "Adorable" seems to be the adjective of choice in the comments and the couple of recs I've seen. Considering that I didn't even sign up for this fandom, I think it turned out rather well, with thanks to my youngest sib who helped me wrangle a bunch of fragments into something more story-shaped.
bobcatmoran: (fics)
Ooh, lookit me, writin' Mega Man fanfic. Wow.

Summary: Part of an ongoing series wherein I ignore the fourth wall, Mega Man characters from the various series play their own games, and, in this one, Blues.EXE doesn't get it and Enzan isn't impressed. Rated E for Everyone, no spoilers.

Enzan privately thought the game was a poorly-thought out piece of junk. )

You can read the previous parts (Classic series Forte, Axl, and X series Zero) at the AO3.

I've completely caught up on the Temeraire series (I think I managed to read the last four books in less than a month), and now I'm all sad because there won't be any more books for awhile. My coping method for the moment seems to be writing ridiculous crossover fic. So, here, have a tiny fic with Finland from Hetalia meeting an OC dragon.

I can't believe I wrote this. )
bobcatmoran: (fics)
I didn't want to add it to the Gigantic Post of Doom last time around (yeah, it's been that long since I've toted my laptop over to the library), but now that reveals are over, I can share my Yuletide story!

I got another Roald Dahl fandom this year, although whereas James and the Giant Peach was relatively light and sweet, The Witches is…erm…not, with about half the book dedicated to describing in detail witches' raison d'êrte, namely "squelching" children. Anyway, I wrote a fic for it! It's a prequel, telling the story of Grandmamma's early adventures as a Witchophile. I did a ton of research on Norway, figuring out where the Grand High Witch's castle was going to be and everything. Then Grandmamma decided to travel out of the country. These things never turn out the way I originally plan them. As a side effect, I now really want to travel to Norway. Dang, that country looks neat.

Anyhoo, the story is called An Austrian Adventure, with much of the action taking place in Salzburg.

Also, I received a totally awesome Axe Cop story, entitled Ask Uni-Man, from helarctos. It's practically perfect in every single way, down to links incorporated to point you in the direction of the (hilarious) comics that are referenced. If you're not familiar with Axe Cop, it's a webcomic, written by a six year old and illustrated by his twenty-nine year old professional artist brother. It's all sorts of hilarious and wonderful, and you should read it. Then read the fic. Because you should read that, too. *nodnod*

Oh, haha, lookit that. Yuletide reveals were…what? Almost two weeks ago? I guess this means I can share what I wrote with y'all now. ^_^

I wrote another Time Traveller's Wife fic this year. Research was fun (and delicious), as I did it by baking and making sure that the NY Times no-knead bread recipe had actually been printed before my story was set. As it just so happened, the date that I had arbitrarily chosen as a placeholder was not only a month after the recipe came out, but also had a convenient snowstorm, which meshed perfectly with the other part of the story.

Anyway, Like Home-Baked Bread is the name of the fic. It's a bit of fluff, a bit of angst, and contains a bit of a spoiler re: What Happened With The Parking Garage, if you haven't read the book. Or if you haven't seen the movie, although I do not recommend the movie even if you liked the book, as Henry and Clare's early relationship comes off as not just kind of messed up but horrifically creepy without the benefit of first-person narration.

I wrote this while I was laid up with my fractured/bruised/whatever toe (still don't quite know what happened there…two doctors, two different diagnoses), and only realized afterward the parallels between the fic and my life.

So. Classic Megaman series fic, set sometime during the first couple of stages of Rockman & Forte. Or Megaman & Bass, if you're so inclined. No warnings.

Many thanks to my sister for betaing.

Blues didn't like sitting this one out, unable to keep tabs on what was going on. )

I am memesheep. Hear me "baa."

Post a paragraph from every WIP you can find. No explanations allowed, just the excerpt.

Oooh, hey, look, some of these actually *aren't* Mega Man )
bobcatmoran: (Fics)
I've been sitting on this for a good while now, and finally got up the nerve to send it to my sister (who more-or-less acts as my beta) and ask what she thought. She gave it the thumbs-up, so here, have an OC-heavy chunk of Mega Man fic, with a bizarre theory about Axl's origin and cameos by Blues and Kalinka.

Previous parts can be found here (the construction of Rock and Roll), here (the construction of X), and here (the construction of Zero).

So now that the big author reveal for Yuletide is over, I guess I can share what I wrote with y'all. :)

First of all, if you haven't read The Time Traveler's Wife, go to your local library and check it out. Read it. That was a really good book, right? Okay. Now hopefully my fic will make a bit more sense.

La Primavera
Fandom: The Time Traveler's Wife
Rating: G
Summary: Being a teenage girl isn't easy. Being a teenage girl who time travels isn't any easier.

The other Time Traveler's Wife stories written for Yuletide in this and previous years are by and large of amazingly high quality, making it a somewhat intimidating but satisfying group to be part of. Actually, that comment goes for *all* Yuletide stories. And extra-special thanks to Cormorant for writing me a story that came from a direction I'd never have thought of and doing something wonderful with it.
bobcatmoran: (Fics)
New fic. This is the third in a series of shorts about robots from the Classic and X series getting glimpses of their successors. Big jump backward in time for this one, as Blues meets Rock and Roll in a horrible clash of musical puns.

Previous parts can be found here.

Took me long enough to post this... )
bobcatmoran: (Fics)
Well, it took me two years, but a few nights ago, I sat down and finally finished "Cookies of Chaos." Here's the entire thing. Hope y'all enjoy it.

Summary: This is why you should never let robots get bored. The robot masters are taking over Skull Castle’s kitchen in an attempt to make chocolate chip cookies. Chaos ensues.

It was a dark and stormy night… )

And, as a bonus, here's the recipie they were working from.
How to really make chocolate chip cookies )
bobcatmoran: (Tinted Blues)
Long ago and far away, I wrote a fic that started out like this:

“Hey, Blues. What’cha reading?”

“You are too reading something.”

Robotics for Dummies. Now go away, Rock.”

Much to my surprise, in the library today I found this book. Not quite Robotics for Dummies, but pretty darn close. I thought I had made that up.

Oh, $#^@&*, it is not that late. Okay. Bed. Now.
bobcatmoran: (Fics)
This was the second or third Mega Man/Rockman fic I ever wrote (the "date modified" on the file is October 3, 2004). I deleted it from the net when instituted its ban on song lyrics, but I came to the conclusion that, although it's not my best work, it's not so bad that I should keep it hidden away on my computer forever. So after a few tiny edits, here is "A Capella." And, yes, Blues does sing, but only briefly, and only for purposes of being a pain in the butt.

True genius cannot function under a background of pop music )
bobcatmoran: (Fics)
I suppose I should explain myself before inflicting this on anyone. The Osumi Electronics robot wheeled its overly-cheerful, disturbingly commercial self into a fic I'm working on. Since the fic takes place before the fifth Classic game, Forte is, obviously, not in it. The idea of him running into the robot, though, was just way too fun to leave alone.

Welcome to Osumi Electronics! )
bobcatmoran: (Fics)
Two shorts here, one new, one old, both focusing on Classic series characters getting glimpses of the X generation of robots.
