I had a rather movie-riffic weekend. Mini movie reviews follow:

Shopgirl was a decent flick. It wasn't "Oh, wow, awesomely good," and it wasn't quite good enough to keep my mind from ocassionaly drifting off into a "Wow, this music sounds like Phillip Glass" thread. I guess I'd file it under "romance," although it isn't really a romance in the traditional sense. Um. Anyway. I'd recommend it if you're old enough to be handling nudity and sex in a movie (if that's not your cuppa tea, go see something else). Just don't go under the assumption that "Hey, it's a Steve Martin film! That must mean it's funny!" because it's so not a laugh-out-loud sort of movie.

Okay, who's been feeding Dumbledore the angry pills? Hogwarts' headmaster is rather rageful for the first half Goblet of Fire. It's weird and kind of disturbing. Everything else, though, was great. This is probably my favorite out of the movies so far. They did a fairly good job of cutting the massive book down into a 2 1/2 hour movie. Ludo Bagman and the house elves are gone, but I totally didn't miss them at all. My dad, who has never read the book, said that he could follow what was going on just fine. Fred and George are AWESOME in this movie, having bigger parts than in the previous three movies combined. The Hungarian Horntail is spectacular, as are the rest of the special effects. But even with all the fancy CGI, it's still very much a character-driven film, as it should be. Oh, and Snape gets hardly any screentime at all, but that which he does have, he steals the show. And Daniel Radcliffe (Harry) is showing himself to be a really, really good actor.

As a side note, John Williams, who did the score for the first three films, did not work on this one. I forget who the new composer is, but his style is noticeably different. "Hedwig's Theme," the musical theme that is most identifiable as the "Harry Potter music" is still there, but oddly, and unfortunately, I think, John William's Voldemort theme was not used anywhere in GoF, despite its pervasiveness in the first two movies.

Go see this one if you haven't already.

If I wasn't a fan of Inuyasha, Swords of an Honorable Ruler would have been filed under "Really Godawful Movies." It avoids that category because of some of the backstory flashback stuff with little!Inuyasha (cuuuute!) and sort-of-little!Sesshoumaru. And because there's a youkai that's bizarrely cute for a little floating, cowardly old man sort of thing. Oh, and the scene where Inuyasha attacks a volleyball ^_^. The plot, however, is pretty stupid. The climax is the World's Longest And Most Pointless Sword Battle. Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru don't want to cooperate. We get it. The sword is evil. We get it. If it starts to bring out mocking Dragonball Z impressions from my sister and me (which this did), it's ventured into Stupid Shounen territory. Basically, if you're a big fan of the series, you might enjoy this (or at least enjoy MST3K-ing it). If not, go off and do something else. Like knitting.
