This is a WIP--there should be just one more part after this, but I figured I should post something a bit more...er...productive than slightly drunken ramblings. ^^;

Game-verse EXE fic, rated G, pre-series.

Author’s Note: For anyone who is only familiar with the EXE anime and/or manga, one of the biggest differences between the game-verse and the other-verses is that in the games, Enzan is a member of the Official Netbattlers. They’re a government-run organization, sort of like police who focus specifically on net crimes. I guess the closest analogues would be the Net Saviors in the anime or whatever the heck that organization is that Enzan and Netto belong to in the manga (I’m too lazy right now to dig out the books and look for the actual name). The key differences are that young people like Enzan are definitely the exception rather than the rule in the Official Netbattlers and also that Netto has never been one of them.

Anyway, here’s the first bit of my take on how Enzan joined the Officials. Hope y'all like it. Let me know if I did anything wonky with the honorifics.

Kumano Mayumi hadn’t even noticed anyone was there until she heard a small, “Ahem” from the other side of the counter.

She looked up in the general direction that people who came to the Official Center would stand when they came to the front desk. She saw no one until she dropped her gaze downward. A young boy, just tall enough for his head to poke up above the counter, was standing impatiently. “May I help you?” she asked.

“This is where the testing for Official Netbattlers is held, isn’t it?” the boy asked.

“Yes, it is. If you’re waiting for a relative, there’s a lounge around the corner,” Mayumi said, pointing. “They have some Legos and coloring books there.”

“I’m not waiting for anyone. I’m here to take the test.”

“You’re here to take the test?”

“Yes, I am. Do you need your hearing checked? I just need you to check over my PET before I take it, right?” the boy said, almost as more of a statement than a question.

“Do your parents know you’re here?” Mayumi asked.

“My father let me use one of the cars today,” the boy said.

That wasn’t really an answer, but she took the red PET from the boy anyway. “Let me just check with someone first,” Mayumi said. She hurried through a door, into a room where several officials were watching the testing on a series of monitors. “Ogata-san, there’s a little boy out there who wants to take the Official Netbattler test,” she said to one of the officials.

“A little boy?” he responded, not taking his eyes off the monitors.

“A little boy,” she repeated, “probably about nine or ten years old.”

“Kumano-kun, we can’t be letting elementary students take this test; they’ll get their navis deleted in an instant,” Ogata said.

“Wait a minute,” said Yuji, another Official Netbattler. “What’d the kid look like?”

“Well, I couldn’t see any of him except his head over the top of the counter, but he had this really odd hair — white on top, with black down on the bottom.”

“Really? Is that his PET there? May I see it?” Yuji took the PET and looked at the navi inside. He smiled, then called out, “Oi, Meijin-san, come and take a look at this.”

Another man walked over. He took the PET from Yuji.

“That’s the same navi that was at the Ijuuin mansion, right?” Yuji asked.

“It certainly looks that way,” Meijin said. “Tell me,” he said to the navi, “who is your operator?”

“My operator is Ijuuin Enzan-sama,” the navi said.

“Well, well, it seems as though our young prodigy has shown up,” Meijin said.

“Young prodigy?” Ogata blustered. “What on earth are you talking about, Meijin-san?”

“You remember that break-in at the Ijuuin mansion a couple weeks ago?” Yuji asked. “Well, when we got there, we hardly had to do anything. That kid out there,” he pointed towards the door, “had managed to single-handedly delete every single one of the navis that had hacked into the security system. Granted, that made the investigationa bit more difficult, since we couldn’t find even a shred of data from the navis, but still, he’s got serious potential.”

“But we can’t just be letting little kids take the test,” Ogata said. “It’s against the rules.”

“Oh, I think we can bend the rules a bit, just this once,” Meijin said. He pressed a few buttons on the PET. “Everything looks in order. He doesn’t have any illegal programs. Go ahead and send him in, Kumano-kun.”

A few minutes later, the boy walked into the testing room, drawing stares from the other test-takers. “All set, Blues?” he asked his navi.

“Yes, Enzan-sama.”

“All right. Plug in, Blues.EXE, transmission!”
