Jun. 8th, 2005 08:22 pmGeez, what a long day. I spent my first full day out in the field, which involved driving out on the world's worst road: two vague tire tracks, going up and down lava flows which would probably have punctured normal tires (fortunately, the NPS trucks have heavy-duty umpteen-ply tires). It seriously took us 45 minutes to drive three miles. But once out there, things did go pretty well. I managed to navigate the group out to a few sites that were surveyed last year with the GPS unit (I've never had to find a point I'd never been to before using only GPS, so that was kind of cool), we managed to not get the truck permanently stuck on top of one of the flows, and we only got back four hours later than we said we would. Um...yay?
