Aug. 4th, 2013 07:38 pmI watched the Great Unveiling Of The Twelfth Doctor while eating lunch, and I'd like to point out that Stephen freaking Hawking agrees that a female doctor with a male companion would be the bee's knees. Said comment by Hawking was almost immediately followed by an asinine comment by Moffat on why he thinks there will be a female doctor when pigs fly (or at least when Elizabeth II's reign ends, because then the queen, as in the head of state on the British throne, will, in fact, be male — we have word for that, it's called "king.")
Anyhow, more thoughts under the cut for those who've somehow managed to avoid spoilers so far.
I'm actually not familiar with Peter Capaldi beyond his appearances in Doctor Who and Torchwood, but I've been hearing good things about him, and those two Whoniverse appearances were very impressive. Twelve meeting Jack might be REALLY awkward, though, given Capaldi's character in Children of Earth. I wonder if there's going to be any lampshade hanging?
While I would have hoped for a non-white and/or non-male Doctor, I pretty much knew that wasn't going to happen, and I am tentatively glad to see that they've gone older this time. I saw a couple folks on Tumblr going all, "But he's old! The Doctor is supposed to get younger with each regeneration!" First of all, have you seen the fifth doctor? And then looked at Six and Seven? Yeah, he doesn't actually get progressively younger. Also, if you go much younger than Matt Smith, you're running into problems with child labor laws. ^_^
I will miss Eleven — he was my first doctor, and probably will always be the doctor to me, but here's hoping the new guy is just as awesome, in his own way.
