Jun. 19th, 2013 06:26 pmWhoops, so I've been doing kind of a crappy job at posting on here, having had my brain suddenly eaten by Tumblr.
I got new glasses today, ordered online from Zenni Optical. It's the first time I've gotten glasses anywhere except a brick-and-mortar store, and so far (two hours since I first tried them on), I love them. They're actually not a new prescription, since my eye doctor said that my current prescription (which I've had since the Bush administration) was still good. But I've been wearing backups with an old prescription that doesn't take into account my astigmatism for a few months now, ever since my regular glasses broke. So now I'm readjusting to having glasses with a stronger prescription, and my eyes are like, "What are you doing? This is weird."
Also! I went to go see Man of Steel over the past weekend. It was better than most of the recent DC-based movies *cough*greenlantern*cough*, and I'm not sad I paid to go see it, but overall, it's not something I'd go out of my way to watch again. I liked the first part better, when I could pretend it was a science fiction movie better than the more action-filled second half.
Things I liked:
-The liquid metal Kryptonian tech. Storytime With Jor-El was probably my favorite part of the whole thing.
-The way they dodged the whole problem of "How dense can Lois Lane be to not see through a disguise that consists of a pair of glasses" by having in on the Clark Kent/Superman double identity from the start
-The whole scene with memory!Jor-El and Lois kicking butt
-General Zod's crazy eyes
Things I didn't like so much:
-How the heck did Clark manage to get a job as a full reporter at the Daily Planet? From the flashbacks, it looks like he's never had a job even close to journalism.
-The completely ridiculous amount of property destruction. Partway through the more action-y part of the movie, I thought to myself, Wow, how the heck is Smallville going to repair like half their downtown being flattened? Does FEMA cover Acts Of Superheroes? Then the action moved to Metropolis, and it became clear that Smallville was, erm, small potatoes compared to what happened next. I actually started laughing at the moment that the fight became so big that they couldn't contain it on Earth any more, no, they had to start destroying satellites. IN SPACE. There's a nice(?) analysis of the collateral damage here.
-Unless Kryptonian genetics work in a COMPLETELY different manner than Earth genetics — I'm not talking about coding genes with a molecule other than DNA or RNA, I'm talking about a completely different mechanism of inheritance — there's some serious genetics and cell biology fail going on there.
-Also, why the heck does the Codex look like a skull?
