Things that I liked about the opening ceremony: The sheer WTFness of the whole thing from an army of Mary Poppins fighting Voldemort during a salute to the NHS and British children's lit to the doves on bicycles to the queen and James Bond parachuting in. A good route to go after Beijing's opening ceremony — something completely different. Also, the parade of nations (which is pretty much the reason I watch the opening ceremony), and the super-awesome cauldron-lighting.
Things that I didn't like: The fact that the NBC commentators would not shut up. If they had anything y'know, useful to say, it wouldn't bother me so much, but when they spend their time going, "This is a really great cover of this song" and blathering on so I can't tell whether or not it's actually a good cover because someone keeps talking over it: not helpful. Made all the more annoying because, since I didn't live in a place with TVs or even the option of TV reception four years ago for Beijing, I downloaded a broadcast that turned out to be Canadian, and found out that in other countries, they don't feel the need to be talking every single second of the opening ceremony.
Still, I am super excited — all the more since one of the US swimmers is from my hometown and, since she's in swimming, NBC will actually be broadcasting her event.
