Aug. 24th, 2011 08:51 pmThe media is still freaking out about the earthquake-that-wasn't around here (I realize that people who were actually near the epicenter might have actually suffered property damage and so forth, but seriously, the only people in the NYC area that I know who felt anything were sitting still, indoors). Meanwhile, I'm watching the approach of Hurricane Irene with trepidation, as I live in the flood zone, only a few blocks from the ocean, and having grown up in the Midwest, have no familiarity with hurricanes. I'm feeling a bit better, though, after a Big Lots/Target run, where I stocked up on food that won't need cooking should the electricity go down (all power lines are above ground around here, all the better for trees to fall on them) and replenished my first aid kit, among other things. My "go bag" is mostly packed should the call go out for evacuation. But, dang, this is kind of scary. Current forecasts have it going just past the east end of Long Island sometime late Sunday/early Monday, and with a pending job loss hanging over my head, I really can't afford to replace a lot of things should they get damaged.
Also, how about those Libyans, eh? Wow, I had not seen that coming. Hopefully whatever government emerges to replace Gaddhafi (because I feel it's only a matter of time before that completely collapses) will be an improvement. Not that improving on Gaddhafi poses much of a hurdle, but the transition out of dictatorship is always a touchy one.
