Thank goodness the flight back was less eventful than the one out, although it was a close thing for my transfer at Chicago — I had to dash through two terminals and was the second-to-last one on the plane.

All in all, a good visit. New Year's was spent with my sister and grandparents (I know, I know, lame, but this is the only time of the year I get to see them, and with my grandpa's health, we don't know how much longer he'll be around. Plus, they're just awesome people), and we even got my teetotaler sister to drink a glass of champagne at midnight.

We had our annual Japanese New Year's dinner a few days early so my brother could be there, although due to scheduling conflicts it was after my stepsibs had left. I feel bad for saying it, but I'm kind of glad that it was pretty much limited to my side of the family this year, since if you add to our total the stepsibs, the stepsister's boyfriend who was also in town, and my stepmom's parents, you get thirteen people. That's a lot, and a bit overwhelming to cook for. As it was, it was quite managable and fun (except for the part where Stepmom decided to "help" by pulling out a box of Japanese New Year's stuff that we hadn't used in years and quizzing us about it in her best "slightly ditzy schoolteacher" manner just as we were getting into the real crunch time of prep).

Oh! And since it's after the author reveal, I can share with y'all what I wrote for Yuletide: James and the Big Apple, a lighthearted James and the Giant Peach fic. It's set post-book in two segments, one which is only a couple weeks later, and one which is about ten or fifteen years later. Inspiration-wise, it owes a lot to my trip to Manhattan for Thanksgiving, even if most of the observations that I filed away for later use didn't make it into the story.
