Oct. 25th, 2009 09:06 pmThoughts on Astro Boy after actually letting it sit for awhile: Still not great cinema, but I think what I was the most pissed off about (besides the horrible voice acting) was that I wanted it to be a certain type of movie, and instead I got something very Americanized and aimed squarely at young kids. It's okay for what it is, it's just not what I was looking for. On the plus side, I think it has the smallest amount of scatological humor I've seen from a kids' movie in quite some time (i.e. none, aside from the butt cannons) which is ironic, since Tezuka was totally not above the occasional toilet humor.
Also, note to self: Osamu Tezuka's Metropolis is not that certain type of movie, either. It's a bizarre blend of 1920s cinematography, 1940s characters, and early 2000s CGI, owing as much to Fritz Lang as anybody. And you knew that. Why did you check that out from the library?
*sigh*
Actually, now I'm curious about Fritz Lang's Metropolis. I think I saw that at the library, too. Hmm.
