I was Designated Door Answerer for Halloween, mostly because I was the only one home for most of the evening. We get a lot of older kids in our neighborhood both because of the age of most of the kids here and also because the people around here tend to be generous with the candy (or so I've been told--I was too old for trick-or-treating when we moved here). In fact, we only got one very young trick-or-treater, a very cute frog who required a lot of parental prompting.

The "WTF" award goes to the kid who, instead of saying, "Happy Halloween" as he left, said, "Happy Mexican Independence Day!" o_O I'm pretty sure that's not right. His friends seemed to agree with me, as one of them said, "No, it's All Saints Day," as they walked across the yard. That's wrong, too (All Saints Day is the day after Halloween), but at least the second kid was close. And everyone in that group said, "Thank you," without a parent to prompt them, so they won points in my book for that.

The "You Fail at Trick-or-Treating" award goes to the kid who was wearing a "costume" of jeans, tennis shoes, and an Old Navy hoodie and was the member of a group of boys (all probably about ten or eleven years old) who, when I answered the door, just held out their pillowcases expectantly until, after a generous pause, I prompted them with, "What do you say?" Second place goes to the teenage girl who talked on her cell phone the entire time she was at the door.
