Oct. 1st, 2005 09:26 pmI'm in the visitor's center, having just finished watching a movie. The computer in here is nice, except for the fact that I'm apparently not moving enough and so I have to flail my arms around every so often so the motion-sensitive lights don't go out on me.
The field trip was fun. We went to HAFO--Hagerman Fossil something-or-other--to look at a site that had burned a week or so ago. It was really, really obvious where the fire had come through. I've never been to a burn site before, and I was surprised at how strongly delineated the burned/not-burned was. We didn't get to the part of the park where they're actually digging up fossils, but I did find a vole skull which will be finding a new home in the visitor center's hands-on collection.
I also learned about yet another way in which fires can start. Not at HAFO, but at another park, there was apprently a fire started when a bird somehow managed to perch on an electric line just right so that it fried itself, landed on some very dry grass, and ignited. o_O
