*Romanized, the robot's name is "Bombaaman," which would typically be translated as "Bomberman." However, I'm going with twenty-odd years of trademark-infringement-free, surprisingly consistent translation on Capcom's part.
**Due to the fact that Japanese doesn't require sentences to have subjects, I can't figure out if this last bit is a note by Dr. Light that his own heart aches at having to transform his domestic robot into a fighting robot, or if it's a comment on Rock's own state of mind. I'm guessing the former, judging by how "kokoro ga itamu" is on its own line, justified left.
Notable Differences
•As usual, the blue bomber is Rockman in Japanese and Megaman in English, which turns up in the background of the stage selection screen. Also as usual, the Japanese version has an extended version of the title.
•Probably working under the same logic that led them to dub the hero "Megaman" in English, "Blues" becomes "Protoman" in the English version.
•Due to space issues , the Japanese version crams a bit more information into Dr. Light's notes. English uses a typeface that only allows about one word per line, and Japanese uses space-saving if occasionally hard to read kanji — 8 bit graphics don't work too well with characters that have fifteen strokes.
•The Japanese version notes how Rockman and Roll are "like siblings," but says nothing about a similar relationship between Rockman and Blues. Conversely, the English release says outright that Mega Man and Protoman are brothers, but has no indication that Mega Man and Roll are considered siblings.
•Not a difference, but I got a kick out of how the computer in Dr. Light's lab is an "IBN."
As always, corrections, comments, or questions are more than welcome!
